When I was growing up, I was not very active. My family and I would participate in charity bike rides from time to time, but I had no consistent exercise. I was overweight from lack of activity and lacked of any sort of knowledge of portion control or of 'healthy' food choices. I was introduced to a couple team sports as a child but I wasn't really good at or interested in either of them. Towards the end of my first year of college I discovered the fitness center on campus and started exercising regularly. I bought a mountain bike during my second year of college to get to classes easier and ride on a trail that ran adjacent to my dorm. A friend of mine soon got a road bike and together we started riding more often.
In 2006, I transferred from UW-Oshkosh to UW-Milwaukee and got a job at a bike shop and I didn't wait long to get my own road bike. It was there that I started to learn about local bike races and I started going on bike rides 5 to 6 days a week. I had never considered racing before, but the more I rode, the more I saw my fitness improve so I decided to try out racing that summer at a race in my hometown. It didn't go very well, but somehow I became hooked. That summer, I discovered my competitive drive. I joined the Cycling Club at UW-Milwaukee in the Spring of 2007 and for the next 5 years I raced extensively around Wisconsin and the Midwest, averaging about 45 road and cyclocross races per year. I have cut back somewhat since then, but I still compete in at least 8-10 bike races per year.
In 2013 I was introduced to sailing, and my second time ever on a sailboat was in a casual race on a warm, breezy August night. It was such a fun and exhilarating time, and it didn't hurt that our crew got it's first win that night! So it was no surprise that I spent a huge part of the summer in 2014 racing sailboats. I love the teamwork it takes to make everything on a boat run smoothly, and there is nothing more relaxing than the moment the motor is turned off, hearing the wind fill the sails and the water splash on the hull.
As much as I love sailing and cycling, I also like to cook, cross country ski, snowboard, and run. I love working with people of all fitness levels and goals. Click here to get a free fitness consultation!
